Textile Experts: 7 Things Your Blanket Label Won't Tell You, and the 100% Cotton One With Nothing to Hide

5 min read

Most people never read the label on their blanket. If you did, you might be surprised what's woven in — petroleum-based plastic, chemically-reconstituted "bamboo," coatings sprayed on to fake a feeling. A 100% muslin cotton blanket, woven the way fabric was made for 2,000 years before synthetics existed, is the rare one with a one-word ingredient list.

1. "Soft-Touch" Usually Means Plastic

Fleece, microfibre, plush, "cloud-soft". Those words describe a feel, not a fibre. Underneath, most are polyester, nylon or acrylic, all made from petroleum.

Muslin is 100% cotton, grown on a plant. The softness comes from the weave, not from oil.

2. Your Bed Is Where Synthetics Shed Most

Synthetic fabric sheds tiny plastic fibres with everyday use and every wash. Bedding sits closest to your face for a third of your life.

Muslin has no synthetic fibres in it, so there's no plastic to shed.

3. "Bamboo" Is Usually Rayon

Most "bamboo" bedding is bamboo pulp dissolved in chemicals and re-spun into rayon. The FTC says it has to be labelled rayon, not bamboo.

Muslin needs no chemistry to become fabric. It's cotton, spun and woven.

4. "Cooling" Is Often a Finish That Washes Out

Plenty of cooling blankets feel cool in week one because of a finish on the fabric. Finishes wash out. A few cycles later you're hot again.

Muslin breathes because of its open weave, so there's nothing to wash out. It gets softer every wash.

5. "Cotton" Can Mean Cotton-Polyester

A lot of "cotton" bedding is a blend, with polyester mixed in to cut cost. The front of the pack rarely makes that obvious.

The Muslin Blanket is 100% muslin cotton. One fibre. Nothing mixed in.

6. The Finishes Touch Your Skin All Night

Dyes, softeners and coatings sit against your skin for hours every night.

Muslin is OEKO-TEX® certified, independently tested for harmful substances, and soft enough that it's long been used for babies.

7. 400,000+ People Already Read the Label and Switched

More than 400,000 customers and over 6,600 reviews, with nearly four in five at five stars.

They wanted one honest thing against their skin: 100% cotton, OEKO-TEX® certified, in 13 colours.
